Atherstones Drinking fountain
I play football for Sutton Coldfield Town FC in The Zamaretto Midland football league. The league covers central England down as far as Burnham and across as far as Sudbury. It is a semi-professional league with many players playing who haven’t made it as professionals and have been released from league clubs. In addition there are also ex professionals looking to earn a few pounds in the lower leagues as they get older.
We have recently been doing well as a team and are currently lying 6th in the league, one place outside of the playoffs. On Saturday we played atherstone who have recently sacked their manager and lay a place behind us in the league. Sutton began bright enough and against a very young Atherstone team began to boss the game. James Quiggin was first to have a crack at goal when he shot from some distance only to see the ball flash past the post. This was followed by a far better effort from Craig Owen that saw Nathan Smith in the opponents goal pull off a great save and tip the effort over the crossbar.
It was all Sutton but Atherstone were battling to stay in touch and not giving any ground. Another shot from Owen cutting in from the left just passed the wrong side of the post with the keeper beaten. Then a great chance fell to Jamille Matt but he scuffed his shot which still managed to hit the foot of the post and was cleared to safety. The next shot came from some way out when Scott Stamps tried a long range effort. Sutton were doing everything but score and another goalmouth scramble from a corner ended when Ed Booth’s shot was tipped over the bar by the keeper. Within minutes Owen broke loose and unleashed a fierce shot which cannoned off the crossbar and was scrambled to safety
At halftime the players all had a drink from the drinking fountain and the second half began with the best chance of the game when Ball was put through one on one with the keeper but shot straight at him. It was almost inevitable that with all the pressure and nothing to show for it Sutton would concede the first goal of the game and it was not long in coming. On the 50th minute a free kick wide on the right was floated over the defence and no one picked up Tom Guiney who stole in at the far post and his diving header found the back of the net this was Atherstone’s first real attempt on goal.
Sutton threw on an extra attacker to try to get the goal that had eluded them all afternoon and within minutes of coming on Craig Marshall had the keeper making yet another of a string of fine saves to keep the ball out of his net.
This was a familiar story of creating lots of chances but being unable to put one away..
