Doing the Homework Before Traveling

The currency exchange rate is an ever-changing number that is determined by the economy of each individual country. Worldwide, there is close to 200 different types of currency in use. In order for trade to be successful between countries, with different types of currency, a currency exchange rate needed to be established. It was not until the 1970′s in which the modern day exchange was created. There are trillions of dollars exchanged all over the world, everyday. To keep up with this amount of trading and investing, the foreign exchange market is in operation 24 hours a day except weekends

When traveling outside one’s country knowing and understanding how the currency exchange works, is an often over-looked necessity. A traveler must first decide how they will go about paying for their travels; cash, credit cards or traveler checks. If the traveler will be using cash they need to know where to exchange their money, for the currency of the country they are in. Banks are often used for cash currency exchange. By learning which banks have the best exchange rate prior to the trip, a traveler can save a lot of money in fees. Credit cards are another option, and often a good one. Most tourist places accept all types of credit cards. When using credit cards a traveler does not need to carry large amounts of cash on their person. Credit Cards also offer very competitive exchange rates and low fees. An old standby when traveling abroad, is the use of traveler checks. The biggest advantage to traveler checks is that they are extremely difficult to steal and use. Two matching signatures must be on each check. One at time of purchase one at time of redemption. Most common thieves would not be able to duplicate a signature, easily.

Travel agents should be willing to sit down with their customers and talk about currency exchange. Exchanges can be done easily and safely with just a bit if knowledge and preparation. A traveler does not want to have to worry about if they are getting the best exchange rate. A traveler, on a once in a lifetime trip, wants to be able to enjoy the sites, worry free,
