Walsall Players drinking fountain

February 6th, 2010

Last night Walsall played Charlton Athletic who have been on a great run in the league and have therefore moved up to third in the league.  Walsall began bright enough and against a very experienced Charlton team began to boss the game. Darren Byfield was first to have a crack at goal when he shot from some distance only to see the ball flash over the crossbar. This was followed by a far better effort from Troy Deeney that saw the Charlton keeper pull off a great save and tip the effort around the post. It was all Walsall in the first half but Charlton were battling to stay in touch and not giving any ground. Another shot from Deeney cutting in from the left just passed the wrong side of the post with the keeper beaten. Then a great chance fell to McDonald but he scuffed his shot which still managed to hit the foot of the post and was cleared to safety. The next shot came from some way out when Matius tried a long range effort. Walsall then had the chance from a corner but when the ball floated in it was cleared by a defender, but only to another Walsall player, he crossed it back in straight to the head of Troy Deeney, who finished superbly. But within minutes the referee awarded Charlton a very dubious penalty. Which they went on to score. At halftime I would think the most of the players had a drink from the drinking fountain. The second half began with the best chance of the game.
