What are Palestinian Scarves?

Palestinian scarves are also often known as Keffiyeh in Arabic or Yashmagh in the Turkish language. These scarves are the traditional headdress worn in a number of Middle Eastern countries by Muslim men. Palestinian scarves are most commonly made of a black and white checkered square piece of cloth that is wrapped around the head and draped over the shoulder in different ways based on the region that the wearer is from. Occasionally, these scarves come in a white and red checkered form, which is more common in Jordan and is also embellished with hanging ropes at the edges.
The Palestinian scarves are mostly made of a blend of cotton and wool in order to keep the wearers head warm, however in certain regions where the weather is extremely hot, people opt for a one made of pure cotton in order to stay cool. The Palestinian scarves are frequently held in place atop the head with a rope circlet. Easily available throughout the Middle East, they can also be found online at a number of Muslim clothing retailers. Due to the ease of access, the keffiyeh today are seen adorned all around the world.
Although these scarves were worn as a part of the local dress, it became a sign of the nationalism during the 1930’s, when the Arab revolt took place. Later in the 1960’s; it became an icon of solidarity against the Palestinian resistance movement. It was also actively endorsed by their popular leader, Yassir Arafat, who was always seen wearing traditional black and white Palestinian scarves at all times.
Today, the Palestinian scarves have more significance and receive a great amount of support all around the world. Numerous people, who want to show their encouragement and endorsement towards the Palestinian struggle for freedom, opt to wear these scarves in some form.
Just as other cultural or ethnic articles turn into trend statements; these scarves have also been used as fashion accessories by many who want to appear chic and elegant. Young Non Muslim men wear them like traditional scarves wrapped around the neck with fashionable jackets for numerous occasions. Women use silk versions of these scarves to match their black evening dresses for a night out or with stylish handbags to accessorize their outfits better. A variety of keffiyeh are available at leading stores throughout America and Europe in silk, cashmere and woolen blends, so it’s easy for people to just walk in and get the kind they want!
